Please disregard the “Celtic/Ethnic” tag; Loreena McKennittʼs music is MUCH more than that.
I had to put something to fill the gap and thought *Celtic* was a fitting description [you can’t deny it’s the predominant element]
I got “The mask and mirror” a few weeks after its release in ’94 just about the time when Loreena started to gain popularity, getting airplay etc – rather uncommon for this particular genre.
Until that day, I’d never heard anything like it. I was mesmerised, a whole new world was opened to me.
I wasn’t the only one. It had the same effect to many other rock fans and that’s something worthy of discussing.
Apart from a few overdriven guitar parts on #2 “The bonny swans”, everything else is acoustic. There’s hardly any relation to Rock, let alone Metal.
And yet, a great proportion of the metal community follows this angelic voice singer [and let’s not forget, composer AND multi-instrumentalist] faithfully.
Which brings us to a dilemma:
You see Mrs. McKennitt will be performing live in Greece in a couple of days. However, due to some health issues of her mother, the entire Mediterranean Tour was rescheduled and now the (Athens) concert date coincides with Mötley Crüeʼs gig!
Decisions, decisions, decisions…
