Rumours of Bootleg copies in circulation [mainly on eBay given the previous reissue was dated back in 2000 and as a consequence had become scarce in conventional stores] have made me put off the purchase of this exquisite U.S. Heavy/Power Metal album several times.
Then, while going through Amazon, my eye caught a new entry of a 2012 edition issued by a label I’d never heard of: “Southworld Recordings”.
But it seemed -and ultimately proved to be- legitimate, was within my price range so I did what any fan would do:
I ordered it [Play.com was a bit cheaper so I bought it from them instead – Yes, every penny counts].
The only question remaining is whether it has been *enhanced* -and therefore qualifies as a Remaster– or is merely a Reissue [which as we have all established, doesn’t necessarily diminish its value audio-wise].
The information inside the booklet doesn’t shed light on the matter but I happen to have a FLAC rip of one of the earlier pressings [not sure which exactly I’m afraid] and can say with absolute certainty that the new one is louder.
Quite noticeable if you I play them side by side, the numbers seem to agree too.
According to foobar’s Dynamic Range Meter, the overall volume level difference is 3dB – I also kept the log in case you’re interested to see the full details/compare the results etc.
My intuition says you’re not.
That’s fine, nitpicking is not everyone’s idea of fun anyhow.
Off to perform some serious tasks now.
First and foremost, locate that goddamn James Byrd’s Atlantis Rising “Crimes of virtuosity” CD. Haven’t listened it in years, it could be ANYWHERE.
For some reason my intuition has just stopped working.
It figures 😛

There is a previous edition by Sony, Metalwork Series. This edition is (back cover) under licence by Sony. So it must be official.
I have the vinyl, Roadrunner label, different cover.
By the way, thanks by posting. Great album, great memories from the ’80s.
