Q: What does a Deep Purple fan do when he completes their official discography?
A: He starts exploring the entire *family tree*.
Oh yes, over the years I’ve discovered some real gems. Unfortunately, for every album that turns out great there’s also one that disappoints you or even worse, makes you wonder why you bought it 😛
Take Roger Glover for instance.
The man responsible for the amazing “Butterfly Ball” in 1974, is the same person who released “Accidentally on purpose” in the late 80s.
I wouldn’t recommend the latter to anybody -devoted fans included!- unless of course they are filthy rich.
In any case, this short-lived project you’re about to listen, doesn’t fall into any of those categories.
“Malice in Wonderland” is pretty good, but I can name a few other Deep Purple related albums topping it.
Compared to Ian Paice/Jon Lord’s previous work with DP (1975’s “Come taste the band”) is softer and more bluesy.
You’re going to love the Hammond organ, the brass parts and the female vocals; from start to end it flows very naturally.
While most reviewers make a special reference to opening track “Ghost story” and “I’m gonna stop drinking”, I prefer “Silas & Jerome” and “Arabella”.
Overall: 7★ out of 10

Care to help?
This Japanese pressing I own may be rare [it was the first issue on CD – at least to my knowledge], but it also lacks the extra material added in the Remasters following.
If you have the 2001 Purple Records edition, featuring 8 bonus tracks, you know what to do 😉
