I’ll try to keep this as short as possible:
Paul Gilbert’s *solo stuff* > Racer X > Mr. Big
Self-explanatory, isn’t it?
I know the majority prefers Mr. Big, the sale figures say it all.
Racer X were always heavier and Paul’s solo albums are… well nobody knows what exactly 😛 (that’s why I love them so much)
I’d like to hear your views on the subject, you may want to state if you’re a *traditional* metalhead or not.
Judas Priest fans for instance are more likely to lean towards Racer X for obvious reasons: Scott Travis presence + that (outstanding) “Heart of a lion” cover.

Paul Gilbert is amazing! Very much a treat to listen to anything he's done.
As far as Racer X goes, it took me a while to get past Jeff Martin's voice however. Initially I couldn’t tolerate his vocals, but have since warmed up to it a little after watching some videos of his performance.
Paul G.'s guitar work with Racer X is outstanding and amazing – words are hard to describe it. But the vocals and overall production of Mr. Big is a lot easier to listen to, and therefore I probably prefer it.
PG's solo work is great and exceptional – he's probably the most talented player of his style you'll find.
I'm not a “metal-head”. Although I do enjoy heavy metal along with a multitude of styles.
PG really fits in any style – very talented and gifted.
